In some super boring corporate news, Source Interlink’s Grind Media which owns Skateboarder, Snowboarder and Surfer magazines has just bought Transworld Media from Bonnier Corp meaning that it now has doubles of the most popular board sport magazines in the world. There are also some BMX and moto titles in the mix but that part of the story is even more boring. What does it all mean? Basically just that the media side of the action sports industry is going the way the product side already has, with corporate synergy trumping originality at an alarming pace. We think it sucks and have already hit up our friends at YoBeat to get in on their poll about the situation. NYC ams came out ready to rip at Transworld Skateboarding and WeSC’s Come Up Tour in NYC last Sunday. While Arto Saari, Dylan Rieder, Clint Peterson, Oscar Meza, and Chris Pastras looked on, locals like Andrew Valencia, Steven Farmer, and Tyshawn Jones shredded their way onto the pages of skateboarding’s bible. The 2013 Vans Pool Party went down this past weekend at the Vans Skatepark with the Master division showing what years of experience brings to the table.Chris Miller took home first place and $15,000, Steve Caballero was in second, and Christian Hosoi was in third. Here is the first part of the recap from the 15th Annual TWS Awards. The night kicked off with Gilbert Crockett winning the Best Rookie Award and then Guy Mariano winning the New Era Readers’ Choice. The Eric Stricker Memorial Award was presented to Steve Van Doren by Arnette Stricker and Don Brown. Next up, Chad Muska and Jamie Thomas presented Best Team which went to DGK. The final installment of HUF’s 10th Anniversary Photo Tee Series has dropped and features none other than legendary lensman and Transworld helmer Skin Phillips. The brothers Huffman, whose last creation was the super rad series “Snowcraft,” have returned with an important piece of work dedicated to the recovery of NYC’s beachfront community, Rockaway Beach. “Beach 87th St. / Surfing After Sandy” details both the tragedy and the inspirational aspects of the neighborhood’s ongoing rebuild. Written and directed by Jesse and Lukas Huffman, the film also features images from Mikey DeTemple, Nick Lavecchia, Joe Carter, and Ryan Struck.
