Ride Shakedown Snoqualmie

11 March 2010, 20.01 | Posted in Competitions, Events, snowboarding | No comments »

Ride’s season crowning event, The Shakedown at Snoqualmie jumps off tomorrow at the Summit at Snoqualmie. Rad ass features, a ridiculous rider list that includes E-man, Dan Brisse, Darrell Mathes, Dustin Craven, Forest Bailey, Lucas Magoon, Marc McMorris, Sebastien Toutant, Yale Cousino, and a bunch more plus a healthy emphasis on partying, the Shakedown is definitely one of the year’s raddest throwdowns. The Canadian version goes down at St. Saveur on April 2.

Architecture for Humanity, a group that aims to “build a more sustainable future using the power of design,” has teamed up with Nike 6.0 for the “Safe Trestles” Design Competition. Currently the only routes into the famed surf spot are dangerous to both people and the environment, involving crossing active train tracks and stepping on fragile ecosystems. The Safe Trestles competition will implement the best design that provides safe access with minimal impact.

The double win comes right on the heels of his silver medal in Vancouver. Yeah you could say the kid is having a good year. Homeland favorites Torstein Horgmo and Mikkel Bang took second and third. Read the whole story on ESPN and check out a rad photo gallery by Matt Murray after the jump.

Scotty Lago Sent Home From Olympics

0219 scotty lago splash Scotty Lago Sent Home From Olympics
In some serious bullshit, Scotty Lago got bounced from the Olympics today because of this picture that showed up on TMZ this morning. The official word that was just circulated says Lago volunteered to leave and miss the closing ceremonies but word around town is that the IOC wanted to take his medal away and going home was a compromise. Seriously, on the scandal scale, this pic rates like a 2 and to fuck a 22 year old kid over for something as PG as a little medal biting is ridiculous. Rad Collector is in Vancouver right now and can tell you that what’s happening across this whole city all day and night during the games is a lot more obscene than this. It’s a further mistreatment of snowboarding and snowboarding culture that doesn’t want or need to adhere to archaic Olympic jock standards. Snowboarding is supposed to be fun. Read the AP story here.

shaun 540x456 Shaun White Wins Olympic Gold
In what was not a surprise but was still pretty rad to see, Shaun White murdered it at the Olympics in Vancouver tonight. After mostly everyone sketched out on their second run, including Scotty Lago who held on for a bronze, Shaun had the win in the bag but still went buck wild on his victory lap, throwing the 1260 Tomahawk and beating his first run score with a 48.4 out of 50. Peetu Piiroinen took the silver. Read the blow by blow on ESPN.

The most hated on division of snowboarding had its Olympic final tonight in Whistler and American Seth Wescott took the gold for his second Olympics in a row. Who? Exactly. But let’s get this guy some money! Canadian Mike Robertson took silver and Frenchman Tony Ramoin got bronze. Say what you want, it was a rad race. Read the whole story on ESPN.

maloof 540x346 Maloof Cup x NYC
In some amazing news for NYC skateboarding, the Maloof brothers have announced that they are bringing their big money Maloof Cup to the city this summer. 5Boro’s Steve Rodriguez will design the course along with Chris Cole, Geoff Rowley, and Joe Ciaglia from California Skateparks. After the event the $1.8 million dollar installation at Flushing Meadows will be donated to the city and will no doubt further establish the Queens spot as a world wide skate destination. Expect madness to descend on June 5th and 6th as the east coast goes nuts trying to snatch a piece of the $250,000 total purse.

In other competition news, Torstein Horgmo took the top slopestyle spot at the Mt Dew tour this weekend, his second consecutive win at the Mt Snow stop. After dropping a frontside 1080, a switch backside twelve and a backside ten late cork on the DC x Neff board we leaked a couple weeks ago, Torstein took the money and ran with pans to ditch the contest bib for hardcore filming for the rest of the year. Full Dew results here.

After stomping a perfect Cab 1080 double cork mute, frontside 1080 tailgrab, Cab 720 mute, frontside 540 tail and backside air, he got the white cowboy hat and moved up to 2nd place in the global TTR standings. Check out the winning run above.
