We brought you the first look at the Quiksilver boardshort vending machine project at the Standard Hotels in Miami, LA and NY. They’ve finally launched them with a series of parties capped off by the opening of the Standard rooftop in NYC during the NY Surf Film Festival. Word, now you can officially leave your shorts at home.
There is some good stuff in the works for NYC this weekend as part of the New York Surf Film Festival. Topping that list is a screening of Quiksilver’s amazing documentary film about Clay Marzo, Just Add Water. Cursed by a condition, Aspergers Syndrome, that may very well be the reason for his unbelievable talent, Clay Marzo is at 20 already one of the most interesting people in professional surfing. The film unspools at Tribeca Cinemas on Saturday September 26 at 6pm and will be followed by a benefit auction for Surfers Healing at the Quiksilver store in SoHo. For advance tickets to the screening go here. Full info after the jump.
We normally stay away from the boring businessy stuff but DC hired a new President named Anton Nistl today and sent out a release saying “DC Co-Founder Block Joins with Quiksilver CEO McKnight and Nistl to Return Brand Focus to its Core Skate Roots.” That’s a bold statement and we welcome it. CEO McKnight even goes on to say, “Anton and I will be working in close collaboration with DC co-founder Ken Block with a renewed commitment to refocus the brand on its core skate values including a realignment of product innovation and brand positioning. As we continue to navigate our way through these challenging times, I’m confident that a return to DC’s foundation of core technical skate products, marketing and distribution…will better position us for years to come.” Again, sounds dope…but the dude they hired , although chock full of experience (Baby Phat, Phat Farm, Pastry, Run Athletics, J-41, Esprit, Osh Kosh, Carters, Adidas, Fossil and Saucony) doesn’t have a single skate brand on his resume. Hmmm. Maybe they should’ve just given the job to Dyrdek. Read the whole release after the jump.
As part of the week of festivities at the Quiksilver x Autumn installation at 201 Mulberry in NYC, Quik is throwing Land Your Thoughts this Saturday, a jam format free-for-all on the mini ramp. First prize is a MacBookPro, which you know would come in hella handy right about now. Other Apple prizes and even some crispy Benjamins for the five best tricks are in the mix as well. Full info after the jump.
This is some inside of the box thinking right here. Quiksilver has installed board short vending machines by the pool at The Standard Hotels in LA, Miami, NY, and Hollywood. Now even if you spaced on packing them you’re still all good to get wet. Each city has a specific colorway and the shorts are meant to emulate a retro design which means they are a bit tight – what else would you expect at The Standard though? In some more good thinking, there is a women’s bikini available in each machine as well so a quick game of “who can get naked and into a suit first” should be more than manageable. Check out the trunks after the jump.
Quiksilver comes with some more heat, literally, for this upcoming shred season with the introduction of their “Faux Flannel” collection. Cleverly disguised as a rockable au courant flannel shirt, the Eastwood and Husqie plaids are actually water repellent riding shirts made of either 100% nylon or 100% polyester respectively. The Husqie (pictured) also features custom embroidery from artist Ryan Haworth. A couple more peeks from Quik’s showroom after the jump.
Quiksilver has a particularly strong collection for the upcoming 2009-2010 season, taking it mostly back to the essentials and keeping minimalist rockability in mind throughout the line. One standout is the Batfox jacket and pant. Coming in camo, black, and most surprising, an all-over US flag print (when was the last time somebody would even think about wearing something like that? Yeah Obama!) and ringing up at only $195 for the jacket and $150 for the pant (no flag pattern on these tough) the whole kit is steez for a really dope pricepoint. Check out some looks from Quik’s NYC showroom after the jump.
For Holiday 09 Quiksilver will be dropping three new signature skate jeans. Developed for Reese Forbes, Danny Garcia, and Alex Olson, all three pieces feature stretchable, moisture-wicking Cool Max fabric. Sound too techy? Hell no. Radcollector took all three pairs out on a test skate yesterday and in hot-as-balls NYC, you couldn’t ask for anything better. The little bit of stretch takes the chafe away and lets you hold shit in your pockets without the seams immediately starting to bust. You definitely don’t get nearly the hot crotch and the jeans stay pretty dry. All three are good cuts with minimal detailing, so no one will ever know your secret. Individual looks after the jump.
Quiksilver’s got a rad new take on viral video with their new clip called The Spot. What begins as a normal Quicktime skate clip morphs unexpectedly into an all out assault on your browser by Tony Hawk, Reese Forbes, Alex Olson, Danny Garcia and Kyle Leeper a la Indian in the Cupboard. It’s great! Check the whole thing out here.
