While there, Sal actually gets on top of the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, a move that is one loose screw away from a scene in Final Destination. Luckily he makes it. We are super stoked for Radcollector familia Jason Bergh and Sal Masekela’s latest collaborative project Alekesam which will premiere tonight as part of its run at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film tells the story of Sal’s upbringing in the shadow of his famous father Hugh Masekela, who if you don’t know, is a major figure in both world music and politics. The world premiere goes down at 10pm tonight at the AMC Village 7 on Third Avenue and 11th Street. Hit the jump for full list of Tribeca Film Fest screenings.
Sal Masekela has announced the the launch of TSO Studios, a new media company specializing in action sports how-to video apps for mobile devices. Skateboard icon Paul Rodriguez has signed on to the rapidly expanding roster of athletes that will give give hands-on, personal instruction to help riders at all levels progress in everything from skateboarding and snowboarding to surfing, motocross, and BMX.
As we mentioned, the Stoked Awards went off last Thursday with an amazing display of emotion and generosity. Awards were given for Volunteer of the Year, Mentor Pair of the Year and for Achievement, with the latter going to Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight. To top it all off, Sal Masekela got the people in the room to cough up another $20,000 on top of the $80,000 he had already generated by running the NYC Marathon this month. Despite being in only their third year, Stoked Mentoring has become firmly entrenched in both the action sports and philanthropic worlds as the dopest sport and lifestyle specific mentoring program in the world. Tomorrow night, founders Steve Larosiliere and Sal Masekela are back at the Red Bull Space for the Stoked Awards and honoring Quiksilver Chairman Bob Mcknight for his charitable contributions. Helping the the whole thing along will be Sal on host duties as well as Joy Bryant, Santigold, Edwin Delarosa, Trouble Andrew and DJ Jayceeoh on the decks. As part of the evening, director Matt Zuckerman and Berry Blanton will debut their short film “Leti’s Story” about a girl who’s life was changed by Stoked. Each year thousands of New Yorkers push themselves to the mind altering distance of 26.2 miles in the New York Marathon. Most do it to brag to their friends, some do it because they like torture, and a few do it for a good cause. Actions sports icon Sal Masekela has decided to jump headfirst into the latter category and is doing a last minute bid at the distance for the sake of his mentoring organization, Stoked. The big budget skate film, Street Dreams, is finished and has hit the preview circuit. Done by Sal Masekela and Jason Bergh of Berkela Motion Pictures, the dudes behind Bra Boys, and starring Rob Dyrdek, P Rod, Sheckler, Terry Kennedy, Ryan Dunn, and more, Street Dreams definitely has all the right people involved and the skating looks ridiculously sick. The skate audience is in the bag; it will be interesting to see if mainstream audiences catch on. The movie hits theaters nationwide on June 12. For more go here.
